I recently did a bit of a Clinique haul (see my Instagram) and stocked up on all my favourite skincare products, and I’ve been really getting into the groove of a daily skincare routine (hurrah! finally!). I’ve got fairly dry skin and barely any acne – thank you, Mum! – so my routine tends to feature a lot of fairly rich creams and oils to help with the dry patches. Keep this in mind when following through below: skin differs so much from person to person, and what works for me may not work for you. That being said, I love a good ol’ skincare review, so here goes…
I usually do my morning routine right after getting out of bed, before I hop in the shower. This means that 1) I’m still super sleepy and can’t quite see what I’m doing, and 2) I look like death. I use a warm, moist (hmmm… mooooiiissssttt) flannelette to wake myself up and clear my skin before moving on to cleanser.
I’ve been using the Clinique Extra Mild Liquid Facial Soap on and off for about 3 years now, and it’s still a favourite. It’s very silky, almost like a light moisturiser in texture, and doesn’t leave my face with a greasy film like some (I’m sorry, Lush Ultrabalm, I just couldn’t get on…), PLUS you get a lot in a bottle (200ml for AU$29). It also doesn’t contain any fragrance, so it’s got quite a light, natural smell, which I quite like.
I lather about half a teaspoon’s worth between my fingers before massaging it in all over the face and neck and then rinsing off again with the warm cloth.
I then use the Clinique Clarifying Lotion 1, which is the version for very dry to dry combination skin. I have to say, at first I didn’t get on with it. The first few times I used it, it seemed to sting a bit, but now that’s died down. It’s cool and refreshing and helps get rid of any dead skin cells or dirt that the cleansing didn’t. Apparently, it’s also supposed to regulate your skin’s natural pH levels, but I don’t see that much of a difference – I’ve always had good skin anyway.
We’re most of the way there! Now I move onto moisturiser. At night, I’ve started trying out the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream, but during the day I use a combination of the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion and then, because the Clinique one doesn’t have an SPF in it, the Cancer Council Face Day Wear Sunscreen over the top. I absolutely love the silkiness of the Clinique lotion – and it leaves my skin feeling super soft all day.
And then I finish with whatever small sample eye or intensive treatments I have lying around. I’ve been using this Clinique Pep Start Eye Cream that came as a sample in one of my orders, which works especially well as an eye primer under concealer if I’ve having a particularly bad black-under-eye day. The applicator is also lots of fun – very soft and smooth under the eye, which feels wonderful when you’ve just woken up.
And then it’s off for a shower and breakfast and the whole morning shabbam. I’d be super interested to hear what you use in your routine, so don’t forget to leave a comment!
