Having lived in Europe over Christmas before, Christmas time is bittersweet for me – I love the traditions, but they really don’t fit with a hot Australian Christmas. I’m excited to get out all the candles and decorate the Christmas tree and eat lots of food, but not so keen on sweatering in 30+ degree heat in an inland city while my boyfriend’s family try and cook a roast lunch in the oven that’s been on for hours. I think it’s time for us to find our own traditions that work with the summer and not against it – so I’ve put together a quick list of five things you can do this December in Canberra to get you in the festive spirit.
Go to the Christmas Handmade Markets
Held at EPIC, an indoor venue, the Christmas Handmade Markets give you a taste of the approaching silly season without suffering heatstroke. The Handmade Markets will be held on the eve of 8th December (Friday), all day 9th December (Saturday), through to the afternoon of the 10th December (Sunday). It’s a good place to find unique, handmade trinkets and gifts for the family, while also supporting local crafters and designers. You could make an event of it and attend the Friday evening – drink Gluhwein, find something to eat and have a leisurely browse through the various stalls. I’ll definitely see you there! You can find more info on their website HERE.
Feel festive at the Canberra Theatre Centre
The next few weeks holds some exclusive Christmassy shows at the Canberra Theatre Centre, including the comedic A Very Kransky Christmas (13th December), as well as some things for the kids, including The Christmas Channel (20th-23rd December) and The Wiggles’ Wiggly Christmas Big Show (20th-21st December). A good excuse to get some friends together and make an evening of it!
Make your own Christmas Table Arrangements and Wreaths
With help from the Social Club, the Floral Society, the Canberra Centre and Saint Valentine Cbr, spend sometime together with others designing and creating your own Christmassy decorations. The Social Club, in collaboration with the Floral Society, are holding a Christmas Table Arrangement workshop on 16th December at their brand new venue, complete with champagne and a grazing table. If that’s a bit too late for you, the Canberra Centre are also holding a Masterclass on 9th December with guest host Megan Morton on styling your dining table for Christmas. Following the success of their first wreath making class in November, Saint Valentine Cbr will also be releasing more dates soon for more Christmas floral workshops, so keep an eye on their Instagram!
Enjoy a cosy time in with tea and Christmas bakes
If you’re more the sort to stay inside with the aircon on, you don’t have to miss out on all the fun. The Tea Garden Co., a tea subscription service in Canberra, can deliver you your own festive drinks, with festive teas like ‘If You Ain’t Dutch, You Ain’t Much’, ‘Mull It Over’, ‘Gingerbread Man’, and ‘If Rudolf Was A Tea’. Put a Christmas movie on, scrounge together some baked goods (you can duck past some bakeries like Knead Patisserie or the new Passiontree Velvet) or get them delivered by The Sugar Deli, and spend some chilled time passively soaking up the festive vibes. Or utilize this time to wrap some prezzies. Your choice.
Visit the Christmas Carnival In The City
The Christmas Carnival In The City, a festival of rides and market stalls, will be held over the first weekend of December, open until 8pm on Sunday 3rd December, so get in there quick! You can leave the young, or young at heart, at the Carnival in Garema Place and take advantage of the sales and free Christmas wrapping service at the Canberra Centre’s Monaro Mall.
